U8 ‘A’ Netball Tournament at Great Walstead

On a chilly afternoon the U8’s were very excited to be playing in a netball tournamant at Great Walstead School. Copthorne were in the same pool as Handcross B, Brighton College, Great Walstead B and Hurst A. The matches were 7 minutes one way.

Copthorne v Great Walstead B Won 4-0
Our first match was against Great Walstead B. Although Great Walstead won the toss and took first centre pass Copthorne were quicker off the mark and were soon in possession of the ball. It wasn’t long before Rachel scored Copthorne’s first goal. When it was Copthorne’s centre pass Bella and Rachel sprinted out to receive the ball from Tianna. Shooters Jasmine and Rachel worked well together getting themselves into good shooting positions within the circle. Defenders Priya, Anna and Ruby marked their players extremely well not giving the opposition the chance to shoot. When the final whistle went Copthorne had won 4-0.

Copthorne v Handcross Park B Won 3-0
Our next match was against Handcross and was played in the sports hall. It took a little while for both teams to adjust to playing indoors and the numerous court markings. Copthorne soon settled and were first to score a goal. I was pleased to see the girls driving forward for the ball and running into space. Ruby and Anna marked exceptionally well in defence making many interceptions. Before the final whistle went Copthorne scored 2 more goals.

Copthorne v Hurst A Won 3-0
Our next match was back outside and against Hurst A. Copthorne won the toss and Rachel sprinted forward to receive the centre pass from Tianna. The ball was quickly passed into Jasmine who scored Copthorne’s first goal. Copthorne were quicker than their opposition around the court making many interceptions and picking up any loose balls. Jennifer and Tianna made some excellent passes into the Copthorne shooters and were there to help if they needed to pass back so that they could get into a better position. Copthorne managed to score another 2 goals winning the game 3-0

Copthorne v Brighton College Drew 1-1
Our final match was back in the sports hall against Brighton College. Copthorne won the toss and chose first centre pass. Although Copthorne had most of the play our shooters were unable to get into goal scoring positions within the circle. After putting the opposition under constant pressure Copthorne scored. In the last minute of the game Brighton College equalised with a super goal taken quickly from the edge of the circle. Unfortunately there was not enough time for Copthorne to score again and the match ended in a draw.

Semi Final – Copthorne v Handcross Park A
Copthorne were winners of pool B and played Handcross Park A who were the runners up of pool A in the semi-final. This was a very closely contested game with both teams being evenly matched. Copthorne were the first to score and it looked like they would win the match but Handcross scored an equaliser in the last few seconds of the game. The game then went to golden goal. The first team to score would win!! After 5 more minutes of excellent play by both teams the score remained at 1-1. An extra minute was given but still no golden goal!! Copthorne went through to the final as they had scored more goals than Handcross during the Tournament.

Final – Copthorne v Great Walstead A Lost 2-0
The final was very competitive and Copthorne played extremely well. Both teams were very evenly matched around the court and the game was played at a very fast pace. Great Walstead scored the first goal but Copthorne’s spirit was not dampened. The girls continued to play with fantastic effort and determination. Great Walstead managed to score another goal but unfortunately there was not enough time for Copthorne to respond. This was certainly a tough match against a tall and strong Great Walstead team.

Congratulations to all the girls whose efforts this afternoon should be commended. A fantastic afternoon, lots of netball in a fun but competitive environment.
Well done to Rachel (captain) Jasmine, Bella, Jennifer, Tianna, Priya, Anna and Ruby.
