U8 ‘A’ Netball v St. Christopher’s

14th October 2016

Today we were up against a St. Christopher’s team who had some very tall girls. Anna was captain today and won the toss and Copthorne had first centre pass. We started very well and managed to get the ball into shooters Rachel and Jasmine who were up against a very agile and tall goal defence who was quick to rebound the ball. Copthorne were first to settle and managed to keep possession of the ball and score a goal. Defenders Priya, Anna and Ruby followed their players, keeping close to them and jumping to intercept the ball. Just before the end of the first quarter St. Christopher’s GA scored a superb goal from the top of the circle to equalise the score.

In the second quarter the match continued to be tightly contested but once again the Copthorne defenders did a superb job denying the St. Christopher’s shooters the opportunity to score.  Tianna, Priya and Bella sprinted into space around the centre court passing into the Copthorne shooters. Rachel and Jasmine both scored goals and Copthorne were leading 3-1 at half time.

After a drink of water and a team talk our focus for the second half was to dodge in front of our opponents.  St Christopher’s had made some positional changes and Copthorne were a little slow to pick up their new partners. The very agile GD from St. Christopher’s was now playing GA but Anna did a fantastic job defending her. The game intensified and the ball moved from end to end. Copthorne started to rush their passes which meant that they could be intercepted by St. Christopher’s. The opposition took advantage of this and managed to score another goal. When the whistle went for the end of the third quarter the score was 3-2 to Copthorne.

In the final quarter Copthorne were determined to keep possession of the ball and once again started to pass and then move into space. Their efforts were rewarded with a goal and Copthorne were now leading 4-2. With less than 30 seconds to go St. Christopher’s scored a goal. The final whistle went and it was a win for Copthorne 4-3.   Well done girls this was a really tough game against a taller team. We must now work on improving our dodging skills so that we can evade our opponent to win the ball. I would like to thank the parents for their support and encouragement today.

Congratulations to the team; Anna (captain), Ruby, Priya, Tianna, Bella, Rachel and Jasmine.
