After a very good start to the season the team were looking forward to playing today. It was a nice surprise when we arrived at Hurst to find out that Hurst had arranged a netball festival and we would be playing against Hurst, Brighton College and Brambletye. Our first match was against Brighton College who had some very tall girls. Copthorne started a little nervously and Brighton College scored the first goal. Once we started to move into space attacking players Tianna and Bella managed to get the ball into shooters Rachel and Jasmine. In defence Priya, Anna and Ruby followed their partners everywhere, marking them very tightly. At half time Copthorne were winning 2-1. The second half was closely contested and both teams demonstrated some excellent play. Copthorne’s court spacing improved as the match progressed and this led to them scoring another goal. The match ended in a win for Copthorne 3-1.
After a drink of water and a team talk we were all set to play our next match against Hurst. Straight from the start Copthorne seemed to be the stronger team. Copthorne were quicker around court than their opponents and were able to link their passes together. The shooters gained confidence within the circle and scored 3 goals in the first half. In the second half Copthorne continued to be the stronger team. Their marking and spacing around court was excellent and Hurst were unable to get the ball into their shooters. It was great to see the girls receive the ball, pass and then move into a space. Shooters Rachel and Jasmine managed to get themselves into excellent shooting positions and between them scored 4 more goals. Resulting in another win for Copthorne 7-0.
Copthorne’s final match was against Brambletye who we had played our very first match of the season against. At the start of the game both teams were very evenly matched around court. Anna, Priya and Ruby once again defended very well, intercepting the ball before Brambletye had the opportunity to shoot. With some excellent centre court team work and passing by Tianna and Bella into the shooters the first goal of the match was scored by Copthorne. Shooters Jasmine and Rachel worked together in the circle and scored another goal before half time. In the second half the match continued to be evenly contested with some excellent play by both teams. At every centre pass Jennifer was determined not to let the WA get the ball and when it was a Copthorne centre pass Jemima and Rachel were always quick out to receive the ball from centre Tianna. A fantastic team effort by all players was rewarded by Copthorne scoring their third goal. When the final whistle went Copthorne had won 3-1.
A very enjoyable afternoon of netball and it was fantastic to see how the girls confidence grew match by match and how well they all improved. Many thanks to all the parents who came to support this afternoon.
Congratulations to the team; Tianna (capt), Jasmine, Rachel, Bella, Jemima, Priya, Jennifer, Anna and Ruby. Well done girls!!
