U8 Rounders v Lingfield Notre Dame

13th June 2016

Won 14½- 6. On a fabulous sunny afternoon the U8’s were excited, but also a little anxious as they were to play the U9B team from LND. Layla got Copthorne of to a very good start by winning the toss and chose to put the opposition in to bat first. LND had 12 players, so we made the innings 24 good balls to give each batter 2 hits. LND scored a ½ rounder of the first ball and then another ½ rounder on ball number 3. Copthorne then overcame their initial nerves and tightened their fielding. Biba bowled with good length and Ella was quick to retrieve the ball at backstop. LND were unable to get the ball out past deep fielders, Daisy and Scarlett, who were quick to field the ball to Harley on 2nd post and Isobel on 3rd post. After 24 good balls LND had managed to score 3 rounders. Copthorne now had a target to chase! Biba was first to bat and encouraged by the rest of the team scored a rounder. This was followed by Ella scoring ½ a rounder on ball number 2. Layla and Daisy also scored rounders with Danni, Harley and Scarlett scoring ½ rounders to add to Copthorne’s total. With 10 balls left in the innings the girls knew it was worth taking a risk. This put the opposition under pressure and rounders were scored by Biba, Clara, Layla and Danni. After 24 good balls, Copthorne had scored 9 rounders. It was now LNDs turn to bat again and after playing it safe on their first bat they started to take a risk which put pressure on the home team. Once again Copthorne fielded exceptionally well, working as a team and making very few mistakes. Ella made a great catch at backstop, reacting very quickly to a ball hit behind by a LND batter. At the end of their 2nd innings LND scored 3 rounders.

In Copthorne’s 2nd innings, Biba got the team off to a very good start by scoring a rounder. Everyone was making good contact with the ball and running sensibly between the posts. Daisy and Lowenna both hit the ball way out past the LND deep fielders to score rounders. Clara, Isobel, Layla and Scarlett also managed to score half rounders bringing Copthorne’s 2nd innings total to 5½.

The girls are to be congratulated on their performance today as they played really well as a team giving encouragement if required. Thank you also to parents who came to support. Top scorer today was Biba with 3 rounders and fielder goes to Harley for her excellent play at 2nd post and also to Ella for her great catch.
