After a couple of weeks without a game due to the cold weather the U8s were back in action on Wednesday against Great Walstead. The game began with both sides sizing each other up. Great Walstead seemed unwilling to run at the Copthorne defence with their well-formed defensive line. Eventually Great Walstead broke through to score but Copthorne went straight back up the other end and scored an easy try through Charlie. The rest of the half saw very few mistakes from either side and tries were traded. Good running from Arun, Rex and Alex caused the Great Walstead defence problems and good tagging from Marcus, Harry and Matthew made it hard for the opposition to score. The half time score was at close 5-4 to Great Walstead with all to play for in the second half.
Unfortunately things went rather downhill in the second half for Copthorne with too many careless errors being made gifting Great Walstead the ball back. Tags were being missed regularly as Great Walstead increased their advantage without any Copthorne reply. Even when a breakthrough was finally made by Copthorne, Great Walstead continued to increase their lead further with even more mistakes. Too many dropped balls and missed passes gifted the game to Great Walstead who ran out 11-7 winners.
It was a disappointing second half and the result could have been much different if the second half was anything like the first. Onwards and upwards next week.
