It would have been easy to think that the U8s had spent their Christmas doing rugby training as the A, B and C teams all put on fantastic performances to win their first matches of the new term. With all three games being played at the same time it was difficult for the coaches to watch all of each game but hopefully this summary of the afternoon’s events will give a flavour of what happened.

The U8C team had a team of whom most had never played a rugby fixture against another school. You would not have known this though as they played some flowing rugby, scoring some great individual and team tries. Copthorne always looked on top in what can, at times, be a topsy turvy game and were never losing. Mistakes were kept to a minimum which was really pleasing as often the team who makes the least mistakes wins the game. Well done to all the boys in the C team for an excellent performance. Team: Liam S, Sachin L, Louis K, Jamie L, Jack F, Taylor M.

The U8B had quite a challenge as Hurst had a couple of extremely quick boys in their side who started the game by scoring a few tries. Copthorne showed great battling spirit though and scored some excellent tries of their own and never let Hurst get too far ahead at any point. Some of the running lines taken by the boys were really good and the support players were always there to finish off some great moves. Defensively the boys improved as the game wore on and they worked out how to stop the quicker boys from gaining too much speed before they had a chance to tag them. The second half saw Copthorne dominate more and get ahead by 3 tries and won the game comfortably in the end. Well done on a great team performance. Team: Noah J, Eddie L, Leo L-L, Dylan W, Caelan D, Alfie E, Harrison B.

The U8A showed just how much they have improved since their first match last term as they put on a very dominant display. From the first whistle to the last the boys scored some excellent, free-flowing tries and used the whole of the pitch well. The boys have learned to pick the gaps and run through them rather than running sideways and this has started to make a massive difference in their play. Support players were always on hand to take a quick pass once a tag had been made and this caused Hurst all sorts of problems throughout the entire game. The first half was not great defensively as the boys stood off and let Hurst come towards them. After a half time team talk this was greatly improved in the second half and Hurst found it very difficult to score past a resolute Copthorne defensive line. A win by 4 tries was really deserved. I believe the boys will cause every team they play against this year problems and I am greatly looking forward to seeing what they can achieve. Team: Taran S, Charlie A, Harry A, Freddy G, Oliver W, Tobi A, Rohan G.
