The U8s played in their first tournament on Wednesday hosted by Great Walstead. There were 2 pools of 4 teams, 12 minute matches and we were raring to go.
- First game v Hurst – won 10-0
- Second game v Brambletye – won 6-2
- Third game v GW ‘B’ – won 7-0
- Winners of our Pool!
After the pool games we had scored a massive 23 goals, with the next team scoring 10! Absolutely brilliant!
We then faced HXP in the semi-final. Won 2-1 This was a tough match with the ball being contested strongly by both teams in the centre of the court. The girls held their nerve and we managed to score the winning goal in the final minute.
Into the final v GW ‘A’ team. Won 3-2. This game was ‘tough’! The Copthorne girls found themselves behind for the first time in the afternoon with the GW team scoring first. There were some great interceptions by both teams and the marking was tight, but we managed to level the score before half-time.
5 minutes to play and it was 1-1. Once again the GW team scored first but the Copthorne girls fought for every ball and they weren’t put off by the GW ‘B’ teams support! At 2-2 it looked like we were going to have to go into a golden goal situation if we didn’t break the dead lock. However, lady luck was on our side and with an unlucky miss from the GW shooters, the ball was passed down to Clara in our shooting D; but she was a little far out and knowing we had to score on this chance she unselfishly passed the ball to Sienna who scored the winning goal! Phew!
Well done to each and every one of you; Cassia, Maryam, Levahna and Melia for their superb defending; you marked your players brilliantly; to Ann, Camillia, Sienna and Clara for their excellent attacking, passing and shooting skills; fabulous team work. A special mention should go to Sienna and Clara whose shooting today was faultless; Ann and Camillia were always on the edge of the D to make sure the girls got into the best shooting position! Some of the other coaches also commented on their play and what a super little team they were … a proud moment!
Congratulations to the team’s coaches; Mrs Cook and Miss Penn. Another Copthorne ‘dream team’ in the making! Once again a huge thank you to our parent supporters, it was lovely to see so many of you today!
