A good performance from the U8A saw them take a narrow defeat against a very strong and well drilled side in the very muddy conditions at Hurstpierpoint on Wednesday. The first half was a little sloppy against the high standards that the boys have set themselves over recent weeks with some sloppy passing and unenforced errors costing meaning the ball was turned over a lot and given back to Hurst who looked dangerous every time they had the ball in hand. For the first few minutes the pattern of Hurst scoring quickly and Copthorne forcing their way up the pitch to score continued for some minutes. Eventually the mistakes started to cost the boys and Hurst went into half time 4 tries up. Strong running from James and Dylan and excellent tagging from Rafe in the first half were something to focus on and so the boys went out into the second half to try and up their game.
Pranav made some good runs at the start of the second half and was backed up by Josh and Ollie whilst the always dependable Lewis worked hard all over the pitch. The boys did play a much better game in the second half and scored some well worked tries to peg back the Hurst team. Still the breakaway tries continued for Hurst which meant Copthorne could never quite get to their score. The final score ended 13-10 to Hurst but it was a credit to the boys that they went out and won the second half after being down at half time. Some work on defence next week will hopefully plug a few leaky gaps when teams are running at them and next week’s fixtures against Pennthorpe will hopefully see a victory.
Thanks for everyone who came to watch in the cold and the mud. Your support is very much appreciated by myself and the boys and makes a big difference to the team.
