U8A v Caterham

11th October 2017

This week the U8’s have a double header with a round robin tournament at Caterham on Tuesday followed by Ardingly on Wednesday.

We travelled to Caterham with three teams and three team Managers.

The A’s were with Mr Glaysher, and due to an administrative error by Mr Coulson we accidently played our first two games against Caterham ‘B’ and Abedour ‘B’. The first match vs Caterham was a one sided affair with us winning 3-0, Alfie scoring the first, Leo the second and Taran smashing in a third from a tight angle.

We moved onto the second game still unaware that we were playing other schools B teams, however this didn’t stop us dominating another game with Rohan in goal not touching the ball in either match. We scored freely throughout the ten minutes and going into the last 10 seconds the ball fell to Harry A who took one touch out of his feet, and smashed the ball from near the half way line into the top corner of the goal. A goal that is one of the best I’ve ever seen, and that’s including adults! A comfortably 5-0 win during our second match we started to ask a couple of questions about why we were finding it so easy.

After  some digging around we discovered that we were actually on the wrong pitch, with a swift move onto the main pitch, we were effectively into a ‘final’ against Hazelwood. The Hazelwood boys had won their previous A team games 3-0 and 5-0, so this promised to be a tough match. We started slowly against a very strong side, but worked hard whenever we lost the ball and tracked back well to make it hard for the Hazelwood attackers. Rohan making a good save then to jump up and smother the second attempt. We were well in the game when the Hazelwood player took on 3 of our defence to strike a great shot on goal which was saved by Ro, only for the rebound player to be unmarked to tap it in. This spurred us into life. Looking to play quickly which is something we’ve worked on all week, Leo won a throw in and took it quickly to Alfie in plenty of space. Alfie took a couple of touches before squaring the ball to Taran who slotted into an empty goal. A great team goal using the skills we’ve practised all week. Unfortunately though the Hazelwood boys came straight back at us scoring again with only 2 minutes left. The drama wasn’t over yet though…Taran found himself in space and was just about to score when a sliding defender made a brilliant tackle to stop the shot. We won the ball back from the corner and the ball fell to Harry who was looking to recreate his wonder goal from the first match, his got his shot off and beat the keeper only to be blocked on the line by a defenders chest. This brought an end to a brilliant match which we were unlucky to lose. A great team effort against a strong side.

More of the same on Wednesday too please boys!
