The boys were, as ever, excited and desperate to play another match and so we spoke about what we had worked on during games sessions and areas to improve during the bus journey to Ardingly.
The B’s played first and although they lost 2-1 they played much the better football and if our finishing had been a little sharper who knows. Our goal scorer was Dan J “the Goal Machine “.
The ‘A’ team game was, however, a different story against a strong and confident side on a winning streak. We went behind mainly due to lack of concentration in defence , particularly frustrating as the boys worked really hard on marking during games sessions. We lacked communication and were prone to ball watching a little too much. The final score was on paper, a heavy defeat but as ever the boys always gave 100 per cent.
From a coaches perspective, the pleasing thing was that even though the result was a poor one, by the end of the game we had started to communicate and defenders were running back to get goal side of the attackers. Albeit not early enough to change the result but a progression never the less.
After both matches, the boys discussed what went well and what needs to be improved and that shows a desire to get better which for me is fantastic. At this age, winning is not as important as learning and enjoying matches, today I genuinely believe the boys and myself did both. We saw improvement in all the boys today , some more than others, but many played their best games of the season so far.
As ever it’s nice to see parents supporting the boys but we must remember how old they are, the range of experience they’ve had in football and creating a positive environment, as this will enable the boys to improve at a faster rate.
Squad for the two matches:
Pranav, Elliott, Josh, Lewis, Marcos, James D, Will, Felix, Arun, Luis, Dylan, Daniel, Adwitiya, Rafe and Matteo.
