The rugby started with a trip back to Glebe Villa’s where we played football just two week ago. We decided to take a squad of 9 for our 7 a side game. For most of the boys this was their first experience of contact rugby. From the first couple of minutes we knew we were in for a tough game. The St Christopher’s boys were organised and regularly played rugby outside of school. We did make some good tackles in the first couple of minutes, but quickly found ourselves 3 tries down. We did, however, start to bring in some of the skills we had used in training by using the side line as a defender and tackling the runner into touch. An example of this was a great double tackle from Arun and Harry, pushing the St Christopher’s player into touch.
We grew into the game and with the last move of the first half, Charlie made a break and scored a great try almost the length of the pitch leaving the St Christopher’s players in his wake. At half time we discussed the need to attack using more width of the pitch. We began to do this and second half saw us put up much more of a fight, with Matthew and Marcus continuing to put in some big hits.
The final score was 7-3. But as a first game of contact rugby for most of the lads, we put up a really good fight against a team that had a lot more experience. The tackling improved over each minute, and the willingness to run into contact was fantastic to see, we went through many phases and kept the ball in hand for most of the match. There are certainly improvements to make, but this will come with time and some more practise during games lessons.
