This week the under 9’s looked to progress on last week’s game at St Christopher’s. Playing on a slightly smaller pitch than expected we started well. We scored a try in the first minute after forcing the mistake from the Windlesham player. This quickly became 1-1 as a couple of missed tackles cost us. We continued to perform well and scored the next two tries to make it 3-1. A well-made try by Windlesham made it 3-2 before we started to get a little tired before half time. The score was brought back to 5-4 before we found our second wing and had one more spurt before the end of the match. We were close to going in to half time 7-4 up. Although a few more missed tackles made it 7-6 at half time and Windlesham had the wind in their sails. Windlesham came out like a new team after half time running with the ball a lot more and making some incisive breaks to score some key tries. Despite some of our best matador impressions we also made some really good tackles and had some great phases of play, unfortunately they came to nothing as either knock-on’s or being tackled in to touch halted our progress. With the score at 8-7 to Windlesham, we started to lose our shape a little and forgot to keep our usual solid defensive line. Windlesham continued to score tries and the final score finishing 7-12 to Windlesham.
A little disappointing after such a good start, but non the less, a huge improvement on last week’s game at St Christopher’s. The lads all put in a good shift and tried hard until the heavy tackles and slight injuries took their toll. A good break over Christmas with an idea of what to expect when they come back, and I’m sure we’ll be able to keep up the intensity for the whole 30 minutes in future and win a few of out remaining matches.
