The U9A’s made the long trip to Pennthorpe looking to build on what has been a fairly solid season so far. It is the first time I have watched one of their matches and I can confirm that there were plenty of positives to take away. Marcus seems to have found his feet (or hands!) in goal and has been pulling off some fantastic saves of late. Harry and Matthew formed the defensive pairing and although there were times when they should have reacted quicker to the ball they were generally strong throughout and only let the hosts in to score 1 goal. The attacking three of Rex, Arun and Alexander caused Pennthorpe a lot of problems, scoring 5 goals between them. It was a close contest at half time with the score line at 2-1 but in the second period we blew them away. We began to move the ball around the pitch using the full width to our advantage. There are certainly plenty of things to work on but there is some potential in this team. I do not normally give a man of the match award and usually put the onus on the team performance but this week I am going to break from the mould and award it to Rex. He was tough in the tackle, played some lovely passes, showed skill on the ball and topped it off with a fine goal. Well done to all 6 boys; a 5-1 win is excellent against any team and a great way to end the half term.
