U9B Cricket v Hurst – Summer 2017

17th June 2017

Another glorious afternoon in the sunshine and another sunburnt nose! Hurst were our visitors today and as always they provided a friendly yet competitive fixture. Their skipper opted to bat first so we took to the field aiming to bowl with accuracy and keep the Hurst score down as low as possible. We probably bowled a few too many wides and no balls but we were very lively in the outfield, reducing the number of scored runs to a minimum. In fact there was only one occasion where Hurst scored more than 1 run off any one ball! That is quite an impressive feat with such a short boundary to hit to. Hurst finished their 12 over stint in bat with a total of 75 runs, mainly due to our extras, however we did manage to take 3 wickets which were all ‘run outs’ to deduct 15 from the score leaving an adjusted total of 60.

We were chasing a very respectable total but one that we reached only last week so we knew we had it in us to win the game. After the first pair we were ahead but a lost wicket in the second pairing meant we were short by a couple of runs after 4 overs. The third pair came in and levelled things up at the half way point so all was to play for with 6 overs remaining. From here on out we showed our superiority racking up a 20 run lead going into the final pair. Although we lost a wicket in the final two overs we had enough in the tank to pick off a couple of singles and accepted the extras when they came. A total of 88 runs was reduced to 78 with wickets taken into account resulting in a winning margin of 18 runs for Copthorne!

Our run scorers were William (8), Oliver (6), James (4), Rex, Felix T, Felix J and Marcos (2), Luis, Matthew, Arun, Arthur and Toby (1). Every one of the 12 boys played their part in today’s victory whether that was scoring runs, claiming wickets or being solid in the field. What was more pleasing was to see them help Hurst, who were short on players. There were always 4 Copthorne boys in the field and they did our school proud by showing great sportsmanship. Rex can even claim running out a player from both Hurst and Copthorne! That now makes it 2 wins from 2 since returning after half term; very well done boys!
