The boys representing the U9B team took to the field this week on a warm, relatively sunny afternoon against a composed looking team from Lancing College. It was an inauspicious start to the match as within the first thirty seconds a long range shot was well stopped by Yuki in goal, but unfortunately was judged to have just crossed the line. The boys settled after this but playing up the hill, the first half proved to be a difficult time. Lancing dominated possession and played with pace and fluency. John made some good tackles alongside Meet in defence and Ted and Henry had to track back to assist with the defensive effort. Alexander did not have much opportunity to demonstrate his skills as the lone striker. Marcus ran particularly hard and made a number of crunching tackles but sadly, this was not enough to stop a further four goals before half-time. In the second half, Marcus moved into goal and Yuki took his place in defence.
The slope was now in our favour and this helped rebalance the match a little. The boys also found some cohesion in defence and Henry, in particular, ran hard and fast with the ball, so nearly breaking free on several occasions. John continued to make strong tackles and Marcus proved to be a fearless and athletic goal keeper, pulling off several saves at close range. The final score was 0-8 but the second half performance was much improved on the first and the boys deserve praise for not giving up.
A special mention must go to Henry for his persistence, but Man of the Match goes to Marcus for persistence in the tackle in the first half and some wonderful goal keeping in the second half. Well done all.
