The second and final U9C rugby match was a home affair against Caterham. We knew that we had to make tackles from the first whistle to the last in order to win the game. Our previous match against Pennthorpe was lost in the tackle area and we were keen to make amends.

Our C’s started brightly and made more tackles in the first 2 minutes than we did before we were 3 tries down in the last game! The game went back and forth with tries being scored at both ends, good tackles being made and even the odd 5 tackle handover, which is a rare sight in C team rugby.

During the second half the floodgates opened with a whopping 16 tries scored within a 13 minute period, but still the scores remained level!

With 2 minutes to play Caterham regained the lead before Copthorne went on one last attack to try to tie the game.  A knock on only metres from the try line allowed Caterham to steal possession and race clear to extend their lead to 2 tries. The match finished 15-13 but if truth be told a draw would have been a fair reflection on a well-balanced game.

I was extremely pleased with the boys today, not only because they managed to score some tries but because of the tackle count. They were much more committed in this area of the game and with every tackle made their confidence grew.  Well done boys; you have come a long way since that first rugby training session back in November.  MA
