With the rain pouring down, our ‘A’ team kicked off their first experience of Prep School sports with a game against Handcross Park. Due to a mistake they were accidently playing Handcross Park ‘B’ team, however at the time we weren’t to know this. The boys started well, with Rohan in goal not touching the ball all game!! After a couple of minutes settling into their positions and formation, we started to take control of the game with Taran scoring from the edge of their box. Within seconds it became 2-0, again Taran the scorer. For the third goal, Taran tackled the Handcross Player straight after the kick off then preceded to run the length of the pitch to score from outside the box. With this game being two, 10 minute halves, we rotated the players regularly to give us chance to see all players. At 3-0 we made our first changes to the team with our two substitutes coming on. Despite our goalkeeper not touching the ball, he was protected by the great defensive work from Charlie and Harry in front of him who quashed any attacks the Handcross players had. Alfie added a goal before half time with a nice strike into the bottom right corner to make it 4-0 at the break. After a half time discussion, the boys set themselves a target of how many goals they wanted to try and score. The second half the pattern of play didn’t change much and we continued to score goal after goal with the final score finishing 7-0, when their teacher blew up a couple of minutes early for full time (although nobody was complaining because of the torrential rain).
A great start to their school football careers, with their teacher after the game admitting that even if we had played their ‘A’s he still thinks we would have beaten them comfortably. Despite playing a ‘B’ team it was a pleasure to see the boys working hard together and being successful because of it. With tougher tasks to come, I’m sure if the boys continue to train hard every day and work together as a team like they did today, they will have many more victories in the near future. Fantastic start boys.
