In between unwrapping presents, eating roast turkey and snaffling mince pies, many of Copthorne’s chess squad gave up their time to represent their school playing three tournaments over the holiday period. Participants included Avyanna S, Aarav B, Sorcha C, Niamh G, George T, Goshan A, Jamie L, Natalie V-H, Amelie R, Ann T, Jasmine O, Arun G, Daniel V-H and Rafe C.  Copthorne Prep begun by winning the Uckfield Academy Primary Cup just before Christmas with Amelie and Arun finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in a field that included over 15 players from Senior Schools in West Sussex. Niamh and Jamie won the Top U8 and Top U9 titles. After Christmas, Copthorne again won the Primary Cup this time at the Burgess Hill Academy event. Copthornians managed to fill the podium with Amelie finishing 1st, Sophie R 2nd and Arun 3rd in a field of just over 40 players drawn from both primary and secondary schools; Aarav and George won the Top U7 and Top U9 title respectively.

The new year heralded a long day at the Hastings Grand Prix on Jan 5th where Super GM David Howell was in attendance and helping with prize-giving. Niamh and Sorcha performed well in the U11 Minors whilst Arun, Rafe and Amelie fought it out in a tough U11 Majors section with Amelie eventually finishing in 3rd place on progressives.

Good luck to our two U11 Girls Teams taking part in the ECF Southern UK School Team Championships being held in Guildford this weekend.  And well done to everyone!
