A Copthorne team comprising, Niamh, Kia, Danni, Amelie, Jasmine, Talia and Sophie took part in the Sussex Girls U11 Chess Championships held at Burgess Hill Girls on Sunday 3rd December. Despite the cold and drizzle Copthorne spirits were high with Niamh, Kia and Talia making their tournament debuts.
Despite Hurst fielding a highly experienced first team dressed in matching initialled regalia, Copthorne were unphased and held their nerve and concentration to build a commanding lead over their principal rivals. Niamh, Kia and Talia worked hard all day and their focus brought rewards as their confidence and scores rose in the second half of the tournament. Sophie had a fantastic victory against the top seed and England #1 in Round 4, whilst Jasmine and Danni fought each other to a standstill in a terrifically competitive final round match that fittingly ended in a draw. Prize-giving was an enjoyable affair with Kia winning top U7 whilst Amelie and Sophie came 1st and 3rd respectively in the overall competition. The school team competition was deservedly won by Copthorne. Our thanks to all the parents and children for their early morning start and giving up so much of their valuable weekend.
