The inaugural Prep Schools Public Speaking Competition was held in our Studio on Thursday, and it proved to be an excellent afternoon’s entertainment. The independent judges, 2 School Inspectors and the Head of English from Hurstpierpoint, praised all 6 schools for the incredibly high standards achieved. Katherine P, Charlotte V and Georgia M represented Copthorne and chose ‘I really, really wanna be … Posh Spice’ as their topic. The other schools: Brambletye, St. Ronan’s, St. Bedes, Holmewood House and Westbourne House, chose diverse topics such as obesity, private education and drama.
In their summing up, the judges talked about keeping to allotted time spans, pace of delivery, eye contact with the audience, index or cue cards and the need for good posture.
There were 3 individual winners: the best chairman was from St. Ronan’s, the best proposer from St. Bede’s and the best individual speaker from Westbourne House, but after long deliberations the judges decided that the overall team winner was Copthorne!
Very well done girls, and also thank you to Andrew Hammond who has started this competition and is hoping to make it a nationwide event within the next year.
