Clay Creations Take Shape in Year 5

Year 5 have been busy developing their clay skills through an exciting project focused on creating slab-built pots. The children began by carefully considering the purpose of their pots, deciding how they would like to use them and exploring different shapes to suit their designs.

They created nets for their chosen shapes, which were used as templates in preparation for making their pots. This week, the children brought their designs to life by cutting around their templates with great care and precision. They showed excellent creativity by adding decorative details, including imprinted patterns and cut-out sections in the side walls.

Using the score-and-slip technique, the pupils carefully joined the pieces together, ensuring their pots were secure and well constructed. It has been wonderful to see such a wide range of individual designs emerge, including cylinders, hexagonal prisms and cuboids.

The children worked incredibly hard, applying a variety of clay techniques while demonstrating perseverance and pride in their work. Next week, the pupils will be adding colour to their pots—we can’t wait to see the final results!
