There has been some consternation regarding this new reading system, which we have just started in the Pre-Prep although it has been running for a year in the Prep. With AR, all the evidence points to much improved reading and comprehension levels, not just in our school but nationwide. Although some children are finding the books easy to ‘decode’, the aim is to improve comprehension and not just simply race through the pages. Children are taking and enjoying comprehension tests on the books they have read, as well as finding them challenging. The level of difficulty may well increase once the children have taken another ‘level test’ in December, but AR ensures 80% comprehension levels before moving children up .. and our aim is to help children to understand the written word, not just be able to decode it.
