Headmaster 1982 – 1999
It is with much sadness that we report the death of former Copthorne Prep Headmaster, David Newton, who recently lost a courageous battle with illness. Having been Headmaster for 17 years, David touched many families’ lives, was universally respected and liked, and the school thrived under his leadership.
He was Joint Headmaster with David Sale from 1982-1984 and then took over as sole Head until his retirement in 1999. During his time at Copthorne, as well as driving academic standards upwards and forging new relationships with many senior schools, David oversaw the building of the Sports Hall (at which point the old gymnasium was converted into the Theatre) and instigated the modernisation of the kitchens and boarding accommodation.
David is survived by his wife Ursi with whom he made an inspirational school team, their children Tristan and Verena, and their families. Although there are no direct descendants still at Copthorne, the name will live on thanks to Newton House, renamed as such shortly after David’s retirement.
Ursi and the family invite you to celebrate the life and to cherish the memories of David at the ceremony to be held at The Surrey & Sussex Crematorium, St Richard’s Chapel, Balcombe Road, Crawley, RH10 3NQ on Friday, 27 September 2019 at 12:45 pm. This will be followed by the wake, ‘A Celebration of David’s Life’ at The Old House, Effingham Road, Copthorne, RH10 3JB between 14:00 – 16:00.
The Dress Code is informal with rugby shirts welcome. There will be family flowers only although donations are welcome to the two chosen charities.
Please follow the link here if you would like to leave any messages and memories or for further information on how you can donate to the chosen charities.
