Welcome to Copthorne Prep School
Copthorne Prep is situated in the heart of Sussex, in beautiful countryside, 10 minutes from Gatwick, an hour from London and 40 minutes from Brighton. Copthorne Prep retains a special place in the hearts of all those who have taught and been taught here over its 120 year history.
Our children are encouraged to develop a love of learning through a range of exciting and challenging opportunities both within and outside the classroom, and we aim to inspire confident learners who will thrive in an ever-changing world.
We focus on each child’s individual learning journey and nurture them through the school, stretching and challenging every child so that they are given the opportunity to achieve their very best and fulfil their aspirations.
This year our children have been awarded 23 scholarships to some of the country’s leading schools and in a range of disciplines that reflects the broad and holistic education we offer here at Copthorne Prep School.
Pre-Prep and Prep School
Reception – Year 6
Enriched learning is at the heart of everything we do. We offer an exciting curriculum with diverse immersive activities for the liveliest and most enquiring minds.
We are proudly non-selective in our approach and welcome children of all aptitudes and abilities. At the heart of our children’s success are hugely inspiring, supportive and very caring staff who work incredibly hard to provide both a stimulating and challenging curriculum. So that when our children eventually do leave us they do so with a real sense of who they are and what they can achieve.
Pupils visit theatres, concerts and art galleries, take part in regular music concerts and a range of drama productions. Visiting speakers for our ‘day in the life of …’ and workshops in art, drama, music and English all help to widen the curriculum
Our facilities include theatre, swimming pool, sports fields, full-size Astroturf, climbing wall, playgrounds, sandpits, an actual forest for forest school, chapel and so much more…
Nursery
Our nursery is where your child will learn to learn as well as promoting imagination, confidence and happiness. Amid the sea of waterproofs and wellington boots you will find children using their imaginations, being absorbed by new experiences and generally having fun. These are the foundations on which Copthorne Prep has been built and preparing children well for the pre-prep years.
The range of nursery activities is huge. Some, like dance, Spanish and football, are optional. Others, like swimming, forest schools, music and French, are all part of the curriculum … depending on your child’s age. Your child will be spoilt for choice. The only choice you have to make is how often your child attends. This is entirely up to you. The minimum is two mornings a week for the younger children and three mornings a week for the rising fours. You can also take advantage of our after-school care until 6.00pm.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Copthorne has a strong tradition of encouraging pupils to take part in the performing and expressive arts and there are numerous opportunities for pupils to develop their skills in these areas including an art club, pottery club, ballet, jazz dance, street dance, the school choir, the school orchestra, speech and drama groups and tuition in a range of musical instruments to name but a few.
Extra-curricular sports include football, rugby, cricket, swimming, athletics, tennis, table tennis, fencing, karate, golf and gymnastics and we promote involvement in national and local competitions. We also offer cookery, STEM club, IT club, history and craft clubs. Tuition in chess has also helped us develop a hugely successful chess squad.
